As part of its interface with the society, the NICHE has undertaken several socially relevant extension programmes. They include:-
Seeweed Cultivation Programme
NICHE sponsored Seweed cultivation programme for the costal women of kanayakumari District in collaboration with Aqua Culture Foundation of India (who supplied the technology) and in association with the kanayakumari district authorities. Through this programme training was imported to the costal women folk on seeweed (Kappaph on seeweed (Kappaphycus) cultivation in shallow waters of kanayakumari cost. This successful training has enabled these women to generate self employment and generate sustainable income. NICHE continue to help the women in the management of the seeweed cultivation project and also in its marketing.
Adoption of Tribal Children
This scheme is intended to make available the state-of-the-art education facilities to the under privileged tribal children of Kanayakumari district. With the help of the district authorities the beneficiaries are to be identified from time to time. The NICHE has undertaken to bear their education expenses including boarding and loding from primary to collegiate level education. Two tribal children by name M.Sangeetha of Mudavapottai and S.Sujitha of Orunooramvayel, identified under the scheme, are studying in the two best schools of Kanayakumari District under the scheme.
Adoption of Government Primary and Middle Schools
Under this scheme NICHE has adopted the following five schools
Two sets of uniforms are provided to all the children of these five schools. Salary of thirteen teachers of these schools appointed under Parent Teachers Association scheme is paid by NICHE every month. In addition to the free supply of Note Books and other stationeries to all the students of these schools, financial assistance is also provided for specific purposes.
Young Student Scientist Adoption (YSSAP)
Every year NICHE conducts talent exam for the students of eight and ninth standards from the schools of southern district of Tamilnadu. Around ten thousand students appear for this exam every year. On the basis of merits hundred students are selected and are provided fifteen days of on campus training on the importance of Science and Technology. Their boarding lodging and training expenses are meet by NICHE. Apart from this the next five hundred each per annum till they complete the tenth standard.
